Famous TV anchor who posted selfies at World Cup game in deep trouble

An acclaimed Houston television anchor who posted herself at a World Cup game is in H๏τ water for accepting free tickets to the match, as well as a Bruno Mars concert.

KPRC–TV anchor Daniella Guzman was given three complimentary tickets to the June 17 game between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, per records obtained by the Texas Voice.

Guzman posted a video of herself sitting in a luxury suite at the 72,000–seat NRG Stadium, alongside her parents, at the sporting event.

The final get–in price to watch that game was nearly $1,300, according to the Houston Chronicle.

The suite Guzman sat in is maintained by the Harris County Sports and Convention Corporation and has hosted various Democratic officials from around the Houston area.

In addition to attending the World Cup game, Guzman was allegedly also given four tickets to the Bruno Mars concert held at the stadium about two months prior on April 22.

The general manager of KPRC–TV, Sean McLaughlin, said the station had opened an investigation into the matter of Guzman’s alleged acceptance of the tickets.

‘Our station takes journalistic ethics very seriously along with anything that could potentially create even the appearance of a conflict of interest,’ McLaughlin told the outlet.

The possibility exists that Guzman could have violated her station’s policies regarding conflicts of interest.

‘Due to this being a personnel matter, we won’t have any other comments,’ McLaughlin added.

On Facebook, Guzman elatedly wrote that ‘experiencing a World Cup game in Houston with my parents was a dream come true!’

‘Enjoying these moments with them was priceless,’ she added.

Guzman also lauded the NRG Stadium in her social media post, noting that the lighting and sound inside was ‘stunning.’

The well known anchor posted footage of her arriving to the stadium, posing with her mother and father inside, as well as clips of Portuguese star striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Guzman and her parents were fully clad in red Portugal gear as they flashed wide smiles while enjoying the game. She tagged KPRC in her post.

It did not appear that she had posted any clips of herself at the Mars concert.

The median price to attend that show inside the Houston stadium was $979, according to TicketNews.

Guzman, who is from Houston, is a four–time Emmy Award winning journalist. She anchors KPRC 2 News at 5pm, 6pm and 10pm, her Click2Houston bio said.

Her Emmys came for her work in Los Angeles and Chicago, where she was a morning news anchor at KNBC and WMAQ, respectively.

In 2023, mother–of–two Guzman was listed as one of the top 30 most influential women in Texas.

The records showing that Guzman had received, in total, seven complimentary tickets were requested by The Texas Voice.

Other beneficiaries of the free tickets allegedly included Commissioner Lesley Briones, Erica Lee Carter, Ellis’ chief of staff Brandon Dudley, Commissioner Rodney Ellis, HCSCC board appointee Elsa Flores, Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, former Houston City Council member and Democratic Harris County judge nominee Leтιтia Plummer and Commissioner Tom Ramsey.

Of the group, most are Democrats except for Ramsey, who is a Republican.

Dudley was not elected as chief of staff, but was a political director for Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign and a campaign manager for Democrat Wendy Davis’ governor campaign in Texas.

Meanwhile, Flores is the president of the Texas branch of the Service Employees International Union, which represents thousands of airport workers, janitors and hospital employees, and has been recurrently involved in Democratic Party politics.

She was the one who publicly voiced the union’s support of Jasmine Crockett in the US Senate race to represent Texas, according to the El Paso Times.
